Blue Doors, Blanket, Broodiness.

How has your July been so far?
Is it flying by as ours is?

In a week, July's end will be here,
and so will the grandparents!

Good thing we are almost done with the guest suite.

We painted the door blue.
It's like, really bright blue.

I went ahead and made Jeff do our front door too.

So bright!

Pretty sure I am in love with it.

And for more bright, I finished piecing and edging my circle blanket.
It turned out way smaller than I pictured.
It's a cute size.

Lots of weaving in left. I tried to weave in as I went.
I got lazy.
I also want to block it to see if the squares will stretch
and look more, square.

It is the perfect baby blanket size.

Switching gears to chickens.

We have a broody hen dug in under the house by the name of Kelly.
She had me panicked all last night because we couldn't find her.
She is Minna's favorite and she found her this morning.
Under the deck sitting on several eggs.

We just went through this will Milo.
It took five weeks or so for her to come out of it.

So, I will just let it run it's course
but will probably pull her out and put her in the coop at night.
I worry about the girls if they aren't locked up safe in the dark.

Look at her.
Makes me sad that she can't get any babies out of all the dedication.

And just because they are cool and also start with the letter "B"...

...bunnies!

Sauce and Banana, you cuties.

There Was A Catch.

The boys haven't been pulling in as many fish as they would like this season.
There have been a couple, but nothing the past two weeks.

Then they got their first kings yesterday.
Now they are happy.

Here is Minna posing with them for scale.
Minna sized fish.

A slipped fillet knife kind of took the wind out of their sails.

A hospital visit and eight stitches got the hand back up and running.

Come on now,
no more kicking back in your (hospital)bed, Jeff.

Back to work on the guest house.

Plus, more fishing tomorrow.

Back to business.

How was your weekend?

Secret Project-Inspiration and Phase 1.

Our latest big project was inspired by this-

A small, simple, one room guest house.

With pretty sliding glass doors that open the room up to the outside,
making the deck and the sleeping area one space.

I love it.
(Thank you Sunset Magazine.)

We have a building here that is parts storage-workshop-garage. In one of it's past lives, it was called the "Cat House". We think it's because of a large number of cats that may have been housed in it. We still call it the "cat house" but it hasn't really stuck for me. I way prefer... guest house.

In order to make it a guest house like the one in that picture, we needed to take out a wall. No problem because for months the tongue of the teardrop stuck out the bottom of the front wall. Jeff was tired of working on the the trailer in the rain, so he busted a wall down, rolled it inside, and built the wall back up around it.

My favorite part is the black garbage bag wrapped in duct tape to protect the tongue from the elements.

Anyway, perfect spot for a pretty set of glass doors. They don't slide and they open in, and not out as I had hoped. But! With a bed on the opposite wall and the doors flung open... gonna be totally Sunset Magazine worthy.

It's well on its way to a complete cat/guest house transition. Jeff is spraying texture on the walls right now. Ready for paint soon!

And, it really isn't a secret.

Well, it kind of was for my folks.
The rest of the world knows.

I thought it would be a fun surprise for them
to have their own room when they come visit.
(Next month!)

It will be so much better than using the boys room
with their twin beds pushed together.

So...

SURPRISE MOM AND DAD!
I can't keep secrets.

Another First...

So, I found myself compulsively weeding yesterday morning.

In my pajamas.

My full cup of coffee forgotten on the fence post.

With eggs in my pocket.

I have had many firsts since moving here to Kodiak.

Yesterday's first is one I am quite proud of.
Only because it means I am trying to grow things.

And it's sorta working out.

We have picked radishes.

Just radishes, so far.
(Besides the two strawberries.)

Leafy greens are growing fast!
We have itty bitty green tomatoes in the greenhouse!
I think the carrots took!

Seeds we started and put outside, are moving skyward.
And vining up and around.

Just as we had hoped.

Plus, this looks like a garden.

We couldn't even see this area last year at this time.
We have done a lot of work out here.

Most of it in regular clothes, I assure you.

And these young ladies are working hard at growing too.

Their eggs will be in my pocket in no time.

Our 4th.

When living so far from family...

...holidays are all about celebrating with friends.

Friends that make us cute things.

Feathery or furry friends.

Folks that bring s'mores fixin's, and their wonderful children.
(And friends we wave over driving down the street, that bring their wonderful dogs.)

And friends that bring tons of fireworks and put on a show.

We have a sweet family of friends out here.

Hope your holiday was as great as ours.

I Said....

"Go ahead and get dressed Minna, ok? Sometimes it's fun to wear red, white and blue, like our flag on the 4th Of July..."

She totally delivered.

Happy 4th, friends!

Today.

We had some unexpected electrical problems out here.

So... things were hectic.

But productive in the end.

And funny. (If only to me.)

And there is always some beauty.

And calm.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day!
