Plants and Animals (and wood)

An almost Fall whirl around the yard.

The garden.
I started.
I tried.
I was a little bit successful.
The wild bunnies were as well.

Next year, hoops.
Starting seeds earlier.
Compost.

That's a broccoli!

Success and happiness with container flowers this year!
So much fun.
Will expand next year with home made containers.

The baby chicks are out!
Working their way into the order.

They are keeping away from their big sisters
and sleeping under the coop.
I wasn't expecting that.
I will let them all figure things out as long as there is no bloodshed.

So far so good.

Yet another GIANT wood pile.
Waiting to be split and stacked.

That's all I have to say about that.

There has been some neat woodworking though!

Sully used a fancy saw and cut all  these pieces out.
It turned into a hanging fishing pole rack!

Isn't it pretty!?

Almost that time to put the poles away for the season.
Almost.

Almost Fall.

There Was A Catch.

The boys haven't been pulling in as many fish as they would like this season.
There have been a couple, but nothing the past two weeks.

Then they got their first kings yesterday.
Now they are happy.

Here is Minna posing with them for scale.
Minna sized fish.

A slipped fillet knife kind of took the wind out of their sails.

A hospital visit and eight stitches got the hand back up and running.

Come on now,
no more kicking back in your (hospital)bed, Jeff.

Back to work on the guest house.

Plus, more fishing tomorrow.

Back to business.

How was your weekend?

Another First...

So, I found myself compulsively weeding yesterday morning.

In my pajamas.

My full cup of coffee forgotten on the fence post.

With eggs in my pocket.

I have had many firsts since moving here to Kodiak.

Yesterday's first is one I am quite proud of.
Only because it means I am trying to grow things.

And it's sorta working out.

We have picked radishes.

Just radishes, so far.
(Besides the two strawberries.)

Leafy greens are growing fast!
We have itty bitty green tomatoes in the greenhouse!
I think the carrots took!

Seeds we started and put outside, are moving skyward.
And vining up and around.

Just as we had hoped.

Plus, this looks like a garden.

We couldn't even see this area last year at this time.
We have done a lot of work out here.

Most of it in regular clothes, I assure you.

And these young ladies are working hard at growing too.

Their eggs will be in my pocket in no time.

Scenes From Our Greenhouse.

So, we have a nice greenhouse out here.

It's big. The size of a small home, really. I am not a gardener. Yet.

This year, I am really trying though. I certainly have the room. Most of the greenhouse is basically a garage. That will change when we actually get... a garage.

I have a little corner for my attempts at growing from seed. Its happening. Things are growing!

Tomato plants even!

It gets quite warm in there. Warm enough to grow tomatoes? We shall see.

I planted stuff in our raised beds in the garden. Filled all the raised beds actually, forgetting that I started a bunch of seeds. I now must find places for all the squash, beans and flowers we started.

We will figure something out.

Sully helped by building a sweet planter box with scrap wood. I love it! He doesn't because he is like his dad, precise and into perfection. I like jagged, scrappy and goofy.

He totally made it to order.

Some of the canary bird vines have a home now. These grew like crazy last year. Hoping for a repeat.

And now, in the greenhouse, are 5 new babies. Baby chicks! They are doing well and soon we will have beautiful green-blue eggs to add to our lovely selection.

Last time, we had the chicks in the workshop. Cant do that this time. Show you why shortly. (It's part of the reason we have so much scrap wood.)

Happy new week to you!

Logging Time.

We had logs delivered when there was still lots of snow on the ground.

Then Jeff and his brother moved them all into a huge pile out back.
I couldn't see the chicken coop or the back gate for months!

Huge pile.

The kids played on it.
The chickens played on it.

And sometimes, Jeff would split logs by hand.

Then he rented a splitter.
Got the rest done in an afternoon.
Then we had a giant pile of split logs blocking my view.

Logs that had to be stacked.

 So we stacked.

 And we staaaaaacked.

We have three separate, neatly stacked log locations now.
The one above has 4 more rows than shown.
Thats a lot of logs.
(And did I say, stacking?)

It was a lot of work but its the kind of work I am craving these days.
Work like growing food and raising animals.
Many of us are being pulled in that direction, aren't we?

I guess it was actually easy, really.
The darn things were cut and delivered to us.
Now we will be warm for the rest of the year.

Luxury for just a few splinters.

Happy Wednesday!
